Once cars hit the bottom of the depreciation curve, and people all of sudden want them as a collectors item, values skyrocket. And seemingly go up forever, whether or not the classic car market is a bubble notwithstanding. So what car is up and ready to hit that upward part of its life?

While they are on the slow march up I think the e34 M5 has a lot of meat on the bone, nice examples car still be in the mid teens and solid drivers can be found around 10,000 when they come up for sale. And as it turns out, it came in purple, which makes it awesome-er.

Do you only mean explode in terms of which car hasn't gone up yet much and will? Or does this include cars that have already seen some hefty appreciation but still have a lot of room to appreciate?

However you want to intemperate it. I'd lean more towards cars that have had minimal appreciation though.

I wish the AW11 was.

Kinja'd!!!

I mean they only ever made 163.000, and a good number of those got turned into racers or modded to death. Early ones turn 30 this year, so it's on the doorstep of becoming a certified classic. I know it's not powerful enough to become an instant classic, and because it's so reliable and easy to keep going it's still not rare enough either. But it's certainly special.

Simple,

Kinja'd!!!

And these four generations specifically. All of them but the 996 have been doing nothing but go up in value since at least 2010, even the mid-year G-series 911s('74-77)

BUY THEM NOW BEFORE THEY REACH ASTRONOMICAL PRICES (o_O)

If the 1st gen 911s are any indication, I fear once they go up, nothing will stop them from going down or even back down to where they currently are.

The 996 I think has reached the very bottom of it's depreciation curve and will go up but slower than a snail over the rest of the decade.

The 997.1 and 997.2 should keep depreciating for a good while longer (I hope) and the 991s WILL go up in time because of the future all-turbo 991.2 lineup.

Kinja'd!!!

Basically, if you want a good priced 911 NOW, buy a 996 or 997, or opt for a 2nd gen Cayman which are well under $30k now.

No matter what happens, I'm making it a goal to have one of them in my possession within the next 2 years somehow.

But my most extreme prediction is that 944 prices will eventually skyrocket as the poor ones get scrapped and the good cars survive and people realize they're actually good cars.

Hmm

Picking the ones that haven't gone up much is tough. Cause once they start going up more than a little bit the values go up like wildfire. Your pick is probably the best one for this category. I think the E39 M5 also fits cause even though it's not as rare and not handbuilt its faster and cheaper to maintain and loved by a ton of people for that reason.

I think the 3 versions of the Ferrari TR - the TR, 512TR and 512M all have a lot of appreciation left even though they have gone up a lot in the last year. Prices are going straight up right now.

The list price for a clean 8000 mile TR is about $130-150K right now depending on year and color. That's still less than they were new. I think these cars will be $300K within 5-7 years despite not being remotely rare because everyone wants the last generation of flat 12 cars ever made for the road. And on top of that the 80s styling that was considered tacky amongst the Ferrari crowd just 5 years ago is now "iconic". And old school enthusiasts love that it doesn't have power steering or nannies.

Shelby Series 1. They've been hovering at or just above their MSRP of about 100k$ but eventually the 249 original cars are going to go up soon. The looks are polarizing but when you had an option for a 600 hp supercharger Olds Aurora V8, who cares about the looks when you will blow the doors off Vipers? Anyway, Shelby's dead and this car remains the only car Shelby American has design and built from the ground-up...dipping into GM and Ford part-bins but still their own creation.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, look at that bare chassis. Simple and light while utilizing Corvette C5 suspension (hello, ZR1 upgrades). It's not perfect but one hotrodder was able to scoop up 77 of the 251 bare chassis meant for the scrap yard, turned them into modified Cobras, and was able to talk to the original suspension and chassis engineers behind the Series 1 to find most or all the weakspots and correct everything .

Just take the cars the kids/teens/young adults were in to in any era and add 30 years. 64-74 muscle cars: blew up around 2000. Porsches were the status symbol of the 70s and 80s: 2010 Porsche bubble begins to inflate. 2020: My guess is: find the rarest cleanest models of Japanese cars and turbo cars (NSX, Type R, RX7, Supra, GTR, Eclipse GNX, and GTO).

True, but god damn 3.2 Carreras and 964s aren't that far behind. They're catching up in the mid-high 20s to low-mid 30k range. You can still comfortably pick up a '74-77 or 911SC for under $20k but the SCs are starting to get comfortable in the 20s. 997.1s are sitting in the 30-40k range and 997.2 are sitting between 45-70k range. The 996 has been under $20k for a good long time now in basic Carrera and Carrera 4 form under 100k miles, but the mkII versions sit at around $25-35k as well.

This really is the best time to get a 911 of any kind in my opinion. the 991.2 is going to be a wildcard for the market depending on how good it is. If it's the bee's knees, current prices should either hold or go down some; if not, I'm screwed for finding a 997.

What say you?

Also on the BMW front, I would argue E9X M3s due to the fact they can be had for cheap at $30-35k.

I know. But I still think the TR will go up way more than a car like the E34 M5. I think it still has a lot of room for appreciation. Look how much it was new:

The car won many comparison tests and admirers - it was featured on the cover of Road & Track magazine nine times in just five years. The price of the Testarossa in the US was $181,000 in 1989, including a $2,700 "gas-guzzler" tax .

$181K in 1989 dollars was a LOT!!!! Per the Internet:

$181,000.00 in 1989 had the same buying power as $352,705.16 in 2015.

Annual inflation over this period was 2.60%.

F430 and Gallardo prices vary based on version and transmission and miles.

You can get an F1 or E Gear one with a lot of miles on it for well under $100K.

You can also get a high mileage manual 1st gen Gallardo for under $100K.

Mid mile F1 F430s or 1st Gen E Gear Gallardos are around $115-130K

Low miles F1 F430s or 2nd Gen E Gear Gallardos are around $135-180K

Add $5000-30000 for Manuél, depending on how much the dealer is marking it up. Some dealers are nuts and mark it up a ton.

Spiders add around $10-20K

And add more as well for the Scuderia or Superleggera (or however you spell it)

And since these cars are the most common ones they have a lot of room to fall. I bet you'll be able to get one with 45,000 miles on it for $55K within 5 years.

R8 V8s are getting cheaper by the day, especially the automatic ones. I really wouldn't be surprised if a 45,000 mile one hits $40K one day. When they were new a ton of people wanted paddles but most the people who want the used ones now want the gated shifter ones.

Well earlier ones between 80-120k miles already are living in the mid-20's. Give another 4 or so years and I bet you will have a good deal of them in the 15k range. German performance cars depreciate like no other, very similar to throwing a rock into a pond to be honest. The quantity of them being built just keeps going up too, so that makes depreciation much easier too.

I agree with that

I think the manual ones will hold value better than the DCT ones. Which makes me screwed.

Also the convertibles will depreciate the hardest just like the E46 M3s. And the carbon fiber roof coupes and unicorn no sunroof sedans will hold value better than cars with sunroofs. And maybe add a little extra value for cars that have all that plus sport cloth and no iDrive because a lot of people want the lightest versions possible

I agree that the 996 is at the bottom of it's depreciation curve, but I think that it's going to appreciate faster than you predicted.

Yes, it's the least loved of any 911 generation, it has a funny face, and a mediocre interior. But they're still very nice cars to drive, and they definitely give you the quintessential 911 feel.

If you buy one for $20k today (and I'm considering it), I bet you could sell it for $25-30k in 5 years.

Yes! They're the unicorn of M5s. The E28 and E34 are awesome but parts are very expensive. The E60 has dat V10 but it's also expensive to keep running. F10 looks amazing but who knows how reliable it will be and it's still expensive to purchase in the first place. And it's not N/A, which I prefer.

The 996 I think has reached the very bottom of it's depreciation curve and will go up but slower than a snail over the rest of the decade.

996 owner. The 996 will follow the appreciation curve of the 914. Eventually, it will be worth something, but is it worth holding on to for that long of a period? I say no, but that's not a bad thing. You can buy one in good shape for less than a new FR-S, drive it like it was meant to be driven, and recover more of your money long-term than had you bought a FR-S. Mine is in easy for a collector to restore to immaculate shape condition, and if the IMS bearing blew, I'd be okay doing an LSx swap so long as I kept it for decades.

But if you want a car to lock away hoping it appreciates versus actually driving it, I'd look into Porsche 931s. The production numbers are low, the value has yet to skyrocket, and even Magnus Walker picked up one.
